Chinese Leader, US' Tillerson Focus On Developing Ties

Boosting ties at all levels tops agenda of Rex Tillerson's first visit to China as top US diplomat

Chinese President Xi Jinping met U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Beijing Sunday for talks focused on developing bilateral ties.

China and the United States have an important opportunity to develop bilateral relations, said Xi during the meeting in the Great Hall of People in the capital Beijing, citing telephone calls with his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump.

Xi said China expects to reach a consensus with Trump and to boost bilateral, regional, and global ties at all levels and properly address and manage sensitive issues.

The Chinese leader also voiced his expectations for a brand-new era which sees constructive developments.

Xi also set forth cooperation as the only good choice for both countries, which, he added, could be expanded through win-win methods.

“We all believe that the two countries can be good cooperative partners,” said Xi, stressing the need for stability in bilateral ties.

Tillerson, for his part, said that Trump values communications with Xi and is ready to develop ties based on steering clear of conflict and confrontation and pursing win-win strategies.

In his first visit to China since he took his office, Tillerson also had met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Saturday.

The duo agreed on denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and comprehensively and strictly implementing UN Security Council resolutions.

“Because China’s stated policy is denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, we renewed our determination to work together to convince the North Korean government to choose a better path and a different future for its people,” said Tillerson.
