A senior military aide to Defense Secretary of Ashton Carter was fired Thursday, stemming from "misconduct" allegations.
Carter said he has referred the matter to the Defense Department’s inspector general for investigation. "I have confidence in the Inspector General's ability to determine the facts. The Department of the Army will then take action as appropriate," he said in a statement.
Carter said he expected proper standards of conduct from Americans in uniform, adding that there would be no exception within the department.
The removal of a senior general is rare for the department.
Lewis formerly commanded forces in Afghanistan and Iraq.
